GARTH

SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 4TH, 9PM
THE GARTH REEVES BAND
ALL-AGES 'TIL 11PM, 21+ AFTER THAT
FREE COVER!

Garth Reeves has been playing professionally for over 18 years. After cutting his teeth in the halcyon days of the Olympia scene, Garth moved to Seattle to explore that cities burgeoning music explosion. A short of list of bands Garth has been in include: Dangermouse, Nubbin, Goodness, Blue Spark… and now as a solo artist and in collaboration with others, Garth is expanding on a catalog of solo work that mines the roots of American musical vernacular.

After returning to Seattle from a stint in Brooklyn, Garth and producer/keyboardist (and Vashon Island resident) Jason Staczek began recording the follow-up to Garth’s first record Nothing But Time in several Seattle studios. Collaborating notably with Ian Moore, Timo Ellis, Pete Droge and Garth’s regular touring band The Unfaithful Servants (Jeff Fielder, Andy Stoller, Mike Musburger), Garth and Jason are honing the song craft and production style of Nothing But Time, while continuing to mine that albums musical landscapes.

Garth’s album Nothing But Time, released in 2005, was made using analog tape, an old Trident board, and a tight knit group of Seattle musicians (Jason Staczek, Pete Droge, Rob Brill, Jeff Fielder, Andrew McKeag, Carrie Akre, Danny Newcomb, and Dan Tyack, and others). The result is a stunning and emotional record deeply rooted in tradition.

FIELDHANDS

SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 11TH, 8:30PM
THE FIELDHANDS
w/BARTON CARROLL
ALL-AGES 'TIL 11PM, 21+ AFTER THAT
FREE COVER!

The Fieldhands is a mix of Vashon Island talent playing mostly original music. Jon Whalen on lead vocals and guitar, sharing the singer/songwriting duties with Dorsey Davis on bass. Simon Martin, who also plays with Vince Martinez and the Great Blue Yonder in and around Seattle, holds down the rhythm sections. They are accompanied by lead-guitarist Richard Lipke, of Subconscious Population fame. Their original music in the Americana and power-pop styles ranges from folk-rock and blues to countrified ballads.

Opening for The Fieldhands is Barton Carroll. "Fans of Eric Bachmann have probably witnessed Barton Carroll's contributions to Bachmann's Crooked Fingers on stand-up bass, lap-steel guitar, and periodic backing vocals. The two forged a friendship over a mutual love of Bruce Springsteen while Carroll was working as Archers of Loaf's merchandise manager and have been collaborating whenever possible ever since then. Carroll is long overdue for recognition of his own talents as a singer and a songwriter. He's hyperintelligent and hyperliterate, but his hushed and naked delivery of dour, country-tinged yarns is infinitely accessible and down to earth. Fans of Cormac McCarthy, take note." The Stranger-Seattle, WA.

This is an all-ages show ‘til 11pm, then 21+ after that.

clinton

SATURDAY, MARCH 3rd, 8:30PM
CLINTON FEARON
w/SARAH CHRISTINE
ALL-AGES 'TIL 11PM, 21+ AFTER THAT
ONLY $10 COVER!

Always a crowd pleaser on Vashon Island, Clinton Fearon & The Boogie Brown Band is coming back to the Red Bicycle for a winter performance of his roots reggae music this Saturday night. If you like roots reggae, this is a show you won’t want to miss. Clinton Fearon has quickly won the hearts of many an Islander and will pack the dance floor with moving bodies.

Much like quite a few other reggae musicians who came of age in the late 1960s and early 1970s, Clinton Fearon was a country boy who migrated to Kingston as a teenager in order to seek his musical fortune amongst the proliferating studios and sound systems of the big city. He was born in St. Andrew in 1951 and moved around the countryside with his father and stepmother before relocating to Kingston in 1967; he immediately organized a singing group with some friends, but it never amounted to anything and broke up before it could record. It was around 1970, when he joined Albert Griffiths and Errol Grandison to form the Gladiators, that he hit his stride as a musician, and began what would be the most significant and commercially successful association of his career.

Flash forward to 1989, when Clinton came to Seattle and co-founded The Defenders and then finally in 1993, formed his own group called The Boogie Brown Band.

When asked about his music, Clinton states that “…our sound is roots, its roots, lovers rock, rock steady. It’s not too far from the root. I’m not trying to branch off into anything I’m not totally relaxed with,” he continued. “A lot of (other bands) try to follow the market. I try to follow my creativity more so than follow the market. It’s what’s in your heart; you have to follow your heart.”

Clinton Fearon is counted among Jamaica's most talented musicians by peers and professionals in the Reggae music industry. His infectious bass riffs have always led the way, whether he is playing bass, guitar or percussion, singing lead vocals or providing background harmonies.

Opening up for Clinton Fearon is Vashon's own Sarah Christine. Whether she is gracing the stage solo acoustic with guitar in hand, or backed by a full band, Sarah Christine’s soulful siren captures attention. This Northwest native weaves a positive musical tapestry, blending her rich honey voice, conscious lyrics and uplifting melodies with the flavors of reggae, rhythm & blues and soul. This gifted singer/songwriter delivers heartfelt messages of oneness, the power of love and the infinite possibilities of clear intention. Classically trained in voice and self taught on guitar and piano she has spent the past 12 years composing and performing. Sarah’s voice has been heard throughout Washington, Oregon, and Hawaii and has been an on-stage presence at numerous festivals including Northwest Reggae Fest, Sierra Nevada World Music Fest, Conscious Culture Festival, Bumpershoot, Seattle Hempfest, Northwest Folklife and many others. Sarah has contributed live and in-studio vocals to various artists such as Publish the Quest, The Crucialites, Adrian Xavier Band, Prezident Brown, Jah Levi, Essential I, Indigitize, and Rau to name a few. She is also featured on a major label release of an all female compilation of U2 covers entitled ‘In the Shadows of U2’.

Preparing to release her first full album entitled “Free From Fear” due out in early 2012, Sarah is laying the groundwork to share her passion with a global audience. Sarah currently teaches private voice instruction and group workshops where she guides people to tap into the power of their own unique voices. Her vision is to travel the world and spread music that inspires and encourages people to live to up to their fullest potential. Her recent two month trip to Jamaica with her husband and three children set the wheels in motion for many more musical adventures to come.

The show begins at 8:30pm, the cover is $10.00 and it is an all-ages event ‘til 11pm, 21+ after that. The Red Bike has experienced sold-out shows with Clinton in the past and anticipates the same for this one, so it’s highly advised that people buy tickets in advance by calling 463-5959 or by purchasing them in person at the Bike.

backbone

FRIDAY, MARCH 23RD, 8PM
RED HOT POLICE WHO CLASH FOR KINKY PETTY CASH
A BACKBONE BENEFIT MUSIC EXTRAVAGANZA
ALL-AGES 'TIL 11PM, 21+ AFTER THAT
$20 COVER!

Yes….it’s that time again…whether you are a musician or a music fan, this is going to be an event worth checking out...

The next Backbone Campaign Benefit is coming up on Friday night, March 23rd at the Red Bicycle Bistro & Sushi.

And man....what a wild and crazy one this will be.....this event has the craziest theme yet. It is called:

"Red Hot Police Who Clash for Kinky Petty Cash"

This gives our participating local musicians a wide choice of music with songs (preferably relevant to protest, power, money, etc) by the following musicians/bands:

1. The Red Hot Chili Peppers
2. The Police
3. The Who
4. The Clash
5. The Kinks
6. Tom Petty
7. Johnny Cash

We thought we’d continue the theme concept again, calling out to our unbelievably talented musicians on this Island to participate. If you missed out on performing in the previous benefit shows, now is your chance to be a part of an spectacular night of music by a huge variety of musicians, all under one roof and for a great cause. If you've performed at these events before, we welcome you back!

Bill Moyer and the Backbone Campaign staff and supporters continue to do some incredible things out in the world right now – this is your chance to contribute to their efforts. For information on what the Backbone Campaign has been up to lately, check out their website at http://www.backbonecampaign.org.

For all seven of the previous Backbone Campaign Benefit events at The Red Bicycle, it was ‘standing room only’ in the back and it was about as packed as they’ve ever seen that place. We even ended up having to turn some people away because there just wasn’t any room left! The event is a unique way to gather with your community - visit with neighbors and old friends and share a wonderful night together, but I cannot urge you enough to get there early!

Musicians may perform one song by the above mentioned bands/musicians at the benefit, either as a solo act or with accompaniment. There have been some great solo performances in the past, as well as some wonderful collaborations that people are still talking about, so we’re hoping for more of the same for this event.

Although it won’t be an acoustic event, it won’t be a big amplified huge extravaganza either. We’ll rotate quite a few people through (maybe 25 or so time slots) each playing one song. There is not much time for set-up, sound check, or tear down, so we want to keep it simple. It’s difficult to accommodate large bands, but not impossible if the transition time takes place quickly. Pick a song, email me back and let me know what it is as soon as possible, and we’ll add it to our list so we don’t have any duplicates. The list tends to fill up pretty fast and please remember, it will have to be first come, first serve…there’s just a certain amount of time slots available and so many more musicians to fill them out here on the Island. Have a second choice in mind, just in case your first one is taken already. We need to try to solidify everything by the end of February i n order to print posters and get the word to the local papers by their deadlines. This is a great audience to play to and if you have CD’s of your own music, it’s a great event to make some sales!

You will be able to see an updated list of the artists who have signed up for this event and what songs they will be performing on the Red Bicycle Bistro web site at http://www.redbicyclebistro.com as soon as people start submitting their songs to us. We’ll have the standard sound setup at The Red Bicycle with the in-house equipment they have, and then run everyone through a guitar amp so that we can keep the flow going and not have to do a sound check for each person. Any songs with drums, we prefer that there is only one shared kit and if bass players can share an amp, that helps a lot as well.

Also, we would like to have some sort of representation by the youth on the island if at all possible…if you know of anyone under 21 that might be interested in performing, please let us know. We think it would add another wonderful dynamic to this special night. There is a window of time between 7:30 & 11pm when anyone under 21 can be in the restaurant where we could make this happen.

John Sparks will be our soundman for this event—he has become the resident soundman at The Red Bicycle. This night should be fun and something a little different than the norm. It’s an excuse to get out of the house, socialize a little bit, and enjoy some first class entertainment.

As always, a huge thanks to everyone who takes the stage and also to those of you who will come to enjoy the music. We are blown away by this wonderful community of musicians and music lovers that continue to support each other every day.

Music creates community. Music matters. –Pete-

THE DIGGERS
ALL-AGES 'TIL 11PM, 21+ AFTER THAT
FREE COVER!

The Diggers are an Island-based group inspired by a broad range of influences. Their sound draws upon Balkan rhythms, klezmer scales and Greek mythology, while being unmistakably Americana. The fiddling of both David Salonen (who also plays bass) and Ben Lang (who also plays guitar) provides a crucial element to the Diggers' sound, while Danny Salonen keeps time on the drums. The vocal harmonies of Nick Simmons (banjo/bass) and Camille Coldeen (accordion), with David Salonen, create an intricate experience of melody and countermelody that weaves its way through all the Diggers' music.

Most of the material is original songs written by Camille Coldeen that become multidimensional through a creative collaboration with her bandmates. Their sets also include folk traditionals, foreign lullabies and other eclectic selections that fit into their idiosyncratic genre. The Diggers gig around the Puget Sound area and hope to, one day, have a CD.

AVAAZA
ALL-AGES 'TIL 11PM, 21+ AFTER THAT
FREE COVER!

Vashon--Avaaza, (Ah-Va-ZAH) derived from “avaaz” the Persian word for “voice,” is the newest world music ensemble to emerge from the vibrant music scene on Vashon Island.

Say's Azula, the lead vocalist for the group: “We are excited to celebrate this auspicious occasion by doing what we love… creating music. World music has, and continues to be a catalyst that brings people together and connects our cultures and global consciousness. When we listen to live music and dance to it, we can connect with each other at a deep level bringing us closer together. We hope that many islanders celebrate with us and come to dance!”

Azula, began her vocal training in the opera. In her late teens, she became enamored with foreign languages, and moved to Europe for several years. She returned to the US to sing in many different languages including French, Spanish, Portuguese, Persian and Arabic.

“The musical styles influencing our sound are primarily those from the Mediterranean region including Flamenco, Gypsy, Arabic, Persian, and North African styles,” Azula explained. “We are also fans of music along the ancient silk trade routes from the Middle East, India, and Southeast Asia,” added Jason Everett, bass player for the group.

Joining Azula and Jason is Fletcher Andrews, the drummer for many bands on the island who continues to drive the rhythm on his drum kit, doumbek, and other percussion.

Avaaza is a new incarnation of a group that was turning heads and shaking booties this summer that was known as Sarab. “There are many new musicians playing in this group, so it just felt right to rename it,” said Fletcher.

New to the group are: Terri Garrett, a professional clarinetist on the island who plays with the Pacific Northwest Ballet and Northwest Sinfonietta; Kenyon Curtiss, playing guitar and Glissentar (11-stringed fretless guitar); and Chaz Reed playing guitar and mandolin.

LEE

FRIDAY, APRIL 13TH, 8:30PM
LEE MACDOUGALL
WEST COAST TOUR STOP ON VASHON
ALL-AGES 'TIL 11PM, 21+ AFTER THAT
FREE COVER!

Born and raised in Grimsby, a small historical town on the east coast of England famous for its fishing industry, Lee MacDougall was still a child when he realised that he wanted to be a musician.

Studying music composition and production at university in the north of England for 3 years gave Lee the chance to concentrate fully on his songwriting and musicianship after being in locally successful bands since he learned to play guitar at 13. While at university Lee played live continuously and was spurred on by the positive reaction his performances received.

After university Lee worked at the local fish processing factory for as long as he could stand it. The last straw came when a colleague stole Lee’s shoes meaning that he had to walk home bare foot! On hearing the news that Lee was jobless, his parents gave him a month to find work and start paying rent. Lee spent the next three weeks locked in his room writing and demoing songs on an old tape recorder before sending them out to labels in London. Again the responses were favourable and within a few days Lee was in London attending meetings, secured on the strength of his songs.

For the next year Lee supported himself by playing live wherever he could in London, reducing costs by sleeping in studios and on people's floors. At this point Lee formed a band. He says: “The highlight was headlining the Quingdao music festival in China in front of 57,000 people and a TV audience of 50 million. We got mobbed at the airport like Beatle-mania.” Once back home, though, Lee felt the direction the band was taking was not what he wanted and so the band split.

Instead Lee wanted to write more personal lyrics aiming to connect more directly with his live audience. Influenced by the Englishness and storytelling songwriting of the Beatles, Kinks, Rod Stewart while also feeling inspired by Nirvana and Tom Petty, Lee’s new material soon came to attention of the acoustic venue bookers and promoters in London. This included various people at LiveNation, Tony Moore at The Bedford and Up All Night Music, who between them started giving Lee good small gigs where he could hone his style and support acts such as Train, Starsailor, Paolo Nutini, The Feeling, Bob Dylan and Van Morrison.

During this time producer Jim Lowe, responsible for number one singles and albums by the Stereophonics, Taylor Swift and the Charlatans, became a fan and started recording versions of Lee's songs. "She" and "Stay" came out of these sessions. Lee and Jim have continued to work together and will be in the studio again over the next few months.

Lee released an EP on iTunes during July 2010, selling 2000 copies in the first 2 weeks with no press or promo - purely through online fan base. Word got out in the Twilight community that Lee has written for Rob Pattinson and fan reaction has been great.

Lee is managed by Phil Taylor at Up All Night Music and plans to tour extensively in the USA, Canada and Europe during the first half of 2011 in order to capitalize on his growing online fan base. It has always been Lee’s deepest wish to be able to relocate permanently to America, so he is particularly excited to tour the USA and move that one step closer to his dream!
"He's pretty amazing and very confident.. like Freddie Mercury meets Duke Special meets Rufus Wainwright, Lee is going to go a long way"
- Kate Mossman, The Word Magazine

"You absolutely cannot fake that kind of sincerity and passion, and particularly the yearning quality to his vocals...."
- Tom Robinson, BBC Radio 6

"Best night of the year so far.."
